A long hike on the Douglas Spring trail starting from the desert floor and going up to the grassy chaparral at the spring, then climbing quickly to the pines at Cow Head Saddle. From there the trail follows Tanque Verde Ridge, drops down into Juniper Basin, and heads back into the cactus forests of Saguaro National Park. The highest point is along the ridge at Tanque Verde Peak where the elevation is over 7000 ft. It is a spectacular panoramic view of Mica Mountain and Rincon Peak to the east, Rincon Valley to the south, Tucson to the west, and the Santa Catalinas to the north. This is a very long hike (over 20 miles) and requires two cars or a pick-up because the trailheads are miles apart. Be sure to bring plenty of water---the natural springs are usually dry.
